Start With Conditions, Then Choose the Spot

Most disappointing sessions around Sydney are not caused by the wrong lure — they are caused by fishing the wrong place on the wrong day. At Tide Fishing we work backwards: read the tide chart, swell forecast, wind direction and moon phase first, then pick the destination that suits those numbers. A 3 m south-east swell that ruins an exposed rock ledge is exactly what makes a sheltered estuary flat worth a look.

Write down three options before you leave home: a first-choice spot, a wind-protected backup, and a low-risk fallback such as a harbour wharf or upper-estuary bank. That habit turns a wasted drive into a productive morning.

Matching Water Type to the Forecast

• Beaches: best with a moderate swell of around 1–1.5 m that forms defined gutters, light offshore or side-shore wind, and the two hours either side of the top of the tide. Dawn and dusk over a run-out tide can also fire.
• Estuaries: forgiving in strong wind and big swell. Fish the last of the outgoing tide near drains, weed edges and channel mouths, then the first of the flood over shallow flats.
• Rock platforms: only on small, clean, long-period swell with a falling or low tide for access. If the forecast is rising or the period is short and messy, choose something else — no fish is worth a washed-off platform.
• Harbour and bays: the all-weather option, especially on windy afternoons when open coast is out of the question.

Reading the Moon Into Your Plan

New and full moons bring bigger tidal ranges and stronger current, which suits deep estuary channels, headland washes and beach gutters that need water movement. Quarter moons give gentler flows that favour shallow flats, sight fishing and light-tackle work. Neither is "better" — they simply point you at different destinations.

Building a Sydney Trip Plan

1. Check the tide times and range for your chosen day, and note high and low water at the closest station.
2. Compare swell height, period and direction with the aspect of the spot — a south-facing beach behaves very differently to one tucked behind a headland.
3. Check wind speed and direction for the exact hours you will fish, not just the daily summary.
4. Set an arrival time so you are rigged and casting before the key tide window opens, not during it.
5. Tell someone your location and expected return time, and set a hard finish time on your phone.

Simple Gear and Safety Checklist

• Rods matched to the water: lighter spin for estuaries, longer surf or rock outfits for the coast.
• Bait and lures for the likely species, plus spare leader and hooks.
• Non-slip footwear, a lifejacket for rock and boat work, water, sun protection and a charged phone.
• Rubbish bag, measuring device and a plan for handling and releasing fish quickly.

Seasonal Rhythm

Warmer months push pelagic activity closer to headlands and see beach species spread along the gutters, while cooler months often concentrate fish in deeper estuary holes and around structure. Keep a short log of date, tide stage, moon phase, wind and result — after a season you will have your own destination map for Sydney that beats any generic guide.
