What You'll Find in This Archive
This page is the full index of everything published on Tide Fishing. Our writing focuses on one simple idea: in Australia, the water tells you when to fish, not the calendar. Every article here helps you read a tide chart, a swell forecast or a moon phase table and turn it into a decision about where to stand and when to cast around Sydney and the coast beyond it.
Guides are grouped by topic below. If you are new, start with the tide basics, then move to the section that matches the water you fish most often.
Tides and Tide Charts
- How to Read an Australian Tide Chart — high and low water times, tidal range, and why the same chart reads differently inside a harbour than on open beach.
- Spring vs Neap Tides — what a big tidal range does to current speed, water clarity and bait movement.
- The Last Two Hours of the Run-Out — why draining estuary flats concentrate fish, and how to position on a channel edge.
- Tide Timing Around Sydney — allowing for the lag between an ocean tide station and a spot several kilometres upriver.
Moon Phase and Bite Windows
- Moon Phase Explained for Anglers — new and full moon, quarter phases, and the link to tidal range.
- Moonrise, Moonset and Night Sessions — planning a beach session so the major bite window lines up with a workable tide.
- Do Solunar Tables Actually Help? — a practical, honest look at using them as one input among several.
Swell, Wind and Weather
- Reading a Swell Forecast — swell height, period and direction, and why a long-period two metre swell is very different from a short-period one.
- Wind Direction and Water Quality — how a steady nor'easter stirs the beach gutters and what a westerly does to an estuary surface.
- Barometric Pressure and Fronts — what to expect before, during and after a change moves through.
- Water Temperature and Current — following warm water pushes down the NSW coast through the warmer months.
Beach Fishing Conditions
- Finding Gutters and Holes at Low Tide — walk the beach dry, mark it, then fish it on the push.
- Best Beach Conditions — moderate swell, a rising tide into dusk, and side-on wind rather than straight in your face.
- Rips, Banks and Where the Bait Sits — understanding the shape of the surf zone.
Estuary Fishing Conditions
- Working the Tide in a Harbour System — flats on the top, channels and drop-offs on the drain.
- After the Rain — freshwater run-off, dirty water lines and where fish shift to.
- Structure Fishing on Slack Water — what to do in the short window when nothing is moving.
Rock Fishing and Safety
- Choosing a Safe Ledge — swell period, sets, wash marks and escape routes.
- When to Walk Away — the conditions that should end a session before it starts.
- Gear and Footing — cleats, a lifejacket, and never fishing a ledge alone.
Rock fishing is the most dangerous form of angling in Australia. Always check the current swell and warnings before you leave home, and treat any forecast rise in swell as a reason to pick a sheltered alternative.
Planning Your Next Session
- Check the tide times for the closest station to your spot and adjust for distance upstream.
- Check swell height and period, then wind strength and direction for the same hours.
- Note the moon phase to judge whether the tidal range will be large or small.
- Pick the location that suits those conditions — not the location you had in mind first.
